Ryan Giggs has backed Kobbie Mainoo to emulate club legend Paul Scholes after an impressive display in Sundays Manchester derby. The 21-year-old was one of the few bright spots for Michael Carricks side despite Manchester United suffering a controversial 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on September 13.Mainoos performance stood out as he created three chances, registered 86 touches and completed four dribbles, leading United in all three categories.Giggs, speaking on Rio Ferdinands YouTube channel, believes Mainoo possesses qualities that could help him develop into a midfielder of Scholes calibre. Its not pace, its acceleration, Giggs noted. So, hes not quick-quick, but he has got that acceleration, and hes, you know, strong physically. Hes a very, very good player. The former Wales international was then asked whether Mainoo could reach the level Scholes achieved during his illustrious Manchester United career.Yeah, I mean, that should be the first pass a midfielder looks at really, you know, ball in behind that 30-yard switch potentially, he explained. That ball forward should be the first pass that you think about. So, if he adds that to his game, as well as the dribbling as well as the short passing, then who knows?Giggs assessment suggests Mainoo already has several key attributes, but developing his range of passing could take his game to another level. The midfielder will now look to build on his derby performance as United seek to recover from the disappointing result.
